This chemical handling unit standard is for people preparing for, and intend to apply for, Certified Handler certification under the Health and Safety at Work (Hazardous Substances) Regulations 2017.

Chemical Certified Handler

NZQA 31291- Demonstrate knowledge of hazardous substances relevant to
Certified Handlers - Level 4, 6 Credits 

(Unit Standard 31291 replaced unit 18412 and 20645)

Pre-requisite: Unit Standard 31290: Demonstrate knowledge of the safe management
and potential adverse effects of hazardous substances in the workplace, or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills

Worksafe: “A certified handler is someone who has been certified to handle very hazardous substances. If you handle acutely toxic (class 6.1A and 6.1B) substances, explosives, fumigants and vertebrate toxic agents you may need to be a certified handler.

Certified handler compliance certificates are issued by compliance certifiers and are valid for five years. The compliance certifier will tell you what they need from you before they can issue the compliance certificate.”
