Sling Complex Loads for Crane Operations

NZQA 3801- Prepare and sling complex loads for crane operations - Level 4, 25 Credits

A requirement to communicate with crane operators at a more advanced level, such as with complex loads. This includes building and construction sites, large scale manufacturing and processing operations.

Complex loads are also referred to as irregular loads. They have one or more of the following characteristics: unequal weight distribution, eccentric loading, irregular shape and proportions with or without set lifting points.

People who successfully complete this course will meet the requirement of unit standard 3801 (25 credits) and will be able to:

  • Describe the purpose and use of types of lifting equipment.
  • Select lifting equipment and apply sling and lifting gear to the load.
  • Select and apply packing and dunnage to crane lift situations.
  • Prepare and sling complex loads.
  • Identify factors affecting the safe operation of the crane.

Pre-Requisites

  • Minimum 28 working days of practice on slinging complex or irregular loads
  • NZQA 3789 - Sling varied loads and safely direct a crane during operations. Book NZQA 3789 here
  • 6 months' experience as a Dogman is advisable 
  • Assessment must be carried out using either a slewing crane with a 10-tonne minimum capacity; or a tower crane or self-erecting tower crane with a 4-tonne minimum capacity.

Sling Complex Loads  Refresher Training

This refresher course will reinforce your working knowledge of crane operations that involve lifting varied regular loads and safely directing cranes during operations. Included are a series of practical exercises. The course also covers any relevant regulations and new developments in the crane industry.

Crane Refresher training is not a legal requirement; however, it is strongly recommended to ensure compliance with the Health & Safety Legislation and its industry "good practice" guidelines.

It is generally seen as good work practice that trainees refresh these unit standards every 3 years.  Duration of this course is 4 hours during the refresher course you will go over the unit Standards and a practical exercise to reinforce the trainee's knowledge on Operating a Crane correctly.  (The practical exercise can be replaced with our Workplace verifier process - This process is simple; a workplace verifier confirms the competency of the learner performing the tasks being refreshed by completing our Attestation form).
